VPN Server
There are a lot of instructions that you can follow when you are trying to set up a VPN server. The first thing you have to consider is your computer’s operating system, the method on how you are connected to the internet i.e. router or modem on a pc. On this tutorial that I am about to show is for Windows XP only. There are other instructions that you may find on how to set up a VPN server for other operating systems.
There are several steps that you have to follow; first of all, you choose one computer from your office for example to be the one that will be used as the server, this is where the people will dial into. When you have chosen a computer, go to the Control Panel. On the left side of your screen there is a Common Task Menu, in here, there is a box called “Network Task” then click on this option. By clicking this, the wizard will start to make the VPN connection, after that click “next”. On that new page shown, select “set up an advanced connection” then click “next”.
It is expected that there are incoming connections that are trying to connect with your computer, accept this by clicking “Accept incoming connections” then click “next”. On the next page that will appear, just proceed on further by clicking “next”, do not mind if it says “Direct Parallel” this is not relevant. On the next page, select the option “Allow Virtual Private Connections”, this is the expected VPN, then proceed to the next step by again clicking “next”. The next step requires you to create or choose an account that will be used to access the server. Select the user by checking the box beside it, and then click “Add”. This is done in order to add a user that will be able to connect and access the VPN server.
The next screen that will appear will present to you the options for the allocation of the IP addresses. This will allow you to see the IP addresses from the people that are connecting. Click “Internet Protocol” and click “Properties”. After selecting a range of IP addresses, remember that IP addresses that are over 200 are free. Click “OK” then proceed to the next step. Then finish the Wizard by clicking “Finish”. Try to go back to the “Network Connections” page; here you will see an icon that says “Accept Incoming Connections”. If you see this, it means that the server connection is already done.
